Newbury Park Steel Tank

The existing 3.8 MG welded steel tank was found to be inadequate for structural stability in the event of a future major earthquake. As the existing Tank was not repairable without substantial cost, the District decided to replace the existing tank with a new one of the same size.

Perliter & Ingalsbe provided a full range of engineering services including assessment of the existing tank, preliminary layout of the new facilities, final design of the tank and associated components, bidding services, construction management, and continuous inspection services.

Major tasks involved were similar to many other new tanks designed by the firm and are listed below.

Major Components and Special Features:


  • Demolition of existing 4.0 MG steel tank
  • New 145' diameter x 33' high welded steel tank with knuckle roof and total storage capacity of 3.8 MG
  • Tank appurtenances, including vent, exterior stairway, interior ladder, manways, hatches
  • Concrete foundation with tank anchors
  • 24" inlet and outlet pipes and valves
  • 24" flexible pipe joint
  • 20" tank overflow and 8" drain



  • 18", 500 feet storm drainpipe
  • Tank access road and facility perimeter road
  • Electrical power supply, controls and instrumentation
  • Security features, including intrusion alarms, security fencing, etc.
  • Proximity to affluent residential area and public outreach program
