Four Steel Tanks Evaluations and Improvements
- Owner: Calleguas Municipal Water District
Calleguas Municipal Water District provides potable water to more than 600,000 residents and meets roughly 70 percent of municipal and industrial water demands of Ventura County, California through its retail purveyors, such as cities and special water districts. Calleguas Municipal Water District provides approximately 130,000 acre-feet of water per year through its distribution system, which is comprised of 140 miles of 14-inch to 78-inch pipelines, 9 reservoirs, 6 pump stations, and 13 pressure regulating stations.
A majority of the distribution system components, including reservoirs have been designed by Perliter & Ingalsbe since 1950s. Calleguas Municipal Water District determined and engaged Perliter & Ingalsbe to evaluate four existing steel tanks for structural integrity and required general improvements. These included the following steel tanks.
- Fairview Reservoir 2.2MG
- Newbury Park Reservoir 3.8MG
- Thousand Oaks Reservoir 7.0MG
- Lake Sherwood Reservoir 3.2MG
Major Components and Special Features:
Analysis, Evaluation, and Recommendations:

- Perform site visit and field investigations
- Review record drawings and shop drawings
- Obtain geotechnical and geoseismic reports
- Perform structural and seismic analyses and evaluations of four existing steel tanks with total storage capacity of over 16.0MG
- Identification of structural deficiencies and development of required structural improvements
- Evaluation of water circulation problems and recommended solutions
- Evaluation of existing reservoir appurtenances, piping, and general site features and recommendations for required improvements
A wide variety of improvements was considered for the four reservoirs, which included the following:

- Structural improvements, including addition of concrete ring beam, tank anchors, replacing deficient shell plate with new thicker shell plates, welding roofing members, etc.
